Marriage

A Jewish wedding usually takes place in a synagogue. It is led by a rabbi. The people getting married stand under a special covering called a Huppah which is a sign of the home they will share. The Huppah is beautifully decorated with flowers.

The wedding couple drink from a glass of wine, which has had prayers, said over it. They are then supposed to read out the marriage promises, in which the groom promises to look after his wife. The bride and groom sign them. The groom gives the bride a ring, which she wears on the first finger of her right hand.

At the end of the service the groom steps on a wine glass which has been wrapped in cloth for protection, this is done as a reminder to the couple that there will be difficult things as well as good things in their life together.
