Death

Jewish people believe that a funeral service should be held as soon as possible after someone dies. It is usually held within 24 hours. The service is simple, because they believe that there should be no differences for rich people or poor people. Everyone has to die. They do not agree with cremation, as they believe that this is destroying of the body that God made.

A Jewish writing says that when a man leaves the world, silver and gold will not go with him, nor any precious stones. The only thing that he can take with him is the Torah he has learned and the good things that he has done in his life.

If possible the person dying may repeat the Schema which sums up their belief in God. They do not believe that it is right for a person to be alone when they die and if possible their family will be with them. After the person has died, they do not leave the body alone until it is buried. They do not believe that death is the end, but teaching about life after death is not very important in Judaism.
