Other Occasions Bar Mitzvah
|
On the Shabbat after a Jewish boys thirteenth birthday, he takes part in the synagogue service for the first time. He says the prayer before the Torah is read in the service. This is read in Hebrew like in all Orthodox services. Often friends and relatives of the young boy come to the service and there may be a special meal afterwards.
Bar Mitzvah means "Son of the Commandments". Once he is this age, a Jewish boy is counted as a man. He can be one of the ten men who must be present before a full service can be held in an Orthodox synagogue.
After his Bar Mitzvah, he is expected to obey all of the Jewish laws.
